Demystifying Disability via TV

"What’s wrong with that kid?"  It’s the question on every child’s mind when they’re confronted with someone who has a disability or is a bit different.  Kids are just curious. "Who Cares Stare" is a straight shooting  television segment  which gives, TV two’s, “What Now” audience, the answers to their questions.  The concept was first aired last year and it was such a huge hit a second series has been in production and will begin screening next month.

This year "Who Cares Stare" is a nine-episode series of 3 - 4 minute no-nonsense  profiles that introduces the What Now audience to cool kids, who live  with a disability.  The series gives kids answers to all the questions  they'd most love to ask!  It demystifies disability and kids who are different, and teaches young viewers about how their bodies work.

"Kristy Munro presenter"

One half of each story will be kids meeting presenter Kristy  Munro, introducing themselves and explaining their world.  The programme hooks onto the aspects of life that kids find interesting.  How does someone who cannot talk use a talk link computer? How fast can you go in a wheelchair? How does a child who is blind choose their clothes?  Kids are quite happy to be up-front with these explanations… they are the experts on their own condition.

The second part of each story uses presenter Kristy Munro to give a graphically enhanced explanation of the relevant aspect of the human body.

Presenter Kristy Munro has mild cerebral palsy and hip dysplasia.  She knows what it’s like to have people stare. She also knows how to work with kids and speaks their language.

"Who Cares Stare" will screen, from 6th March onwards, on Sunday mornings as part of the 'What Now' children's programme on TV2 (8am-10am)

Definitely worth a look for the young and young at heart.

WAIKATO RADIO EXPERIMENT
We are beginning a radio campaign in the Waikato to raise awareness of the Society for people with CP and introduce them to our programmes. This will culminate in a presentation at Wintec (City Campus, Bill Gallagher Room) on Friday the 18th February, beginning at 5:30pm. It will be interesting to see how it all goes. For existing members who would like to come along, we will be putting up a registration form on this website in the first week of February.

Invitations to 60th Celebrations and getThis&That (gTT)
Invitation will be in members letter boxes by the 23rd December. The celebration is in Auckland on the 12th March 2011. This event will be a formal event, and the Society will not be holding anything as big as this for another 10 years!
It has been decided that members outside of Auckland can use their gTT allocation ($200) to assist with their transport or accomodation in Auckland.
We hope you can make it!
