FUTURE BOCCIA CHAMPIONS ON DISPLAY

Following on from the successful inaugural schools Boccia day last year, some of Auckland’s best junior Boccia players again went head to head at the Auckland secondary schools Boccia competition, on the 22nd June, at Waitakere College.

For some this was their first tournament. Others had already experienced such competition in last years’ tournament which was attended by 50 students from Mount Roskill Grammar; Takapuna Grammar; Waitakere College and eventual winners Papatoetoe High School.

Although the 2010 defending champions Papatoetoe were unable to take part this year, the three remaining schools were joined by Carlson School for Cerebral Palsy and the 2011 winners Oaklynn Special School - to add extra competition and interest.

The tournament gave all students, teachers, assistants and parents a further idea of the possibilities that are out there in disability sport. Although the atmosphere focused on enjoyment, once on court the competitive sporting nature shone through and created some excellent games. These students showed why they can be future champions by showcasing the skills and tactics needed to win.

“Despite their young ages, these students are a talented group of young people. They all have the ability to develop the needed skills and strategy quickly and we want them to enjoy their Boccia”, said Luke Morriss, the Director of Boccia.

To end the day, past New Zealand Paralympic Games representatives Ross Flood and Stacey Roche (Halberg Trust) put on a short exhibition match in front of the 80-strong crowd. Despite the lack of preparation from these two ‘retired stars’, both showed glimpses of why they have been to the top and treated everyone to a mouth-watering game to further add fuel to fire for the youngsters.

To build on this enthusiasm here are two boccia related events to pencil in to your diary

July 16-17th: Auckland Boccia Battle of the Bridge, AUT Sport and Recreation
Centre North Shore, Auckland.

August 30th: Christchurch Secondary Schools Boccia Competition, Mairehau
