It’s all about 'Attitude'

Robert Martin, first inductee to Hall of Fame

“The only things we are talking about tonight are what we CAN do,” said children’s author Glynne MacLean, who was artistic achievement award winner, at the Attitude awards, held at Eden Park’s , ASB lounge, last night (Thursday 3rd December)

How right she was.

There was definitely a positive WOW factor at the 2009 Attitude Awards dinner. People from all walks, and wheels, of life showcased their capabilities.

There was Spirit Award winner Karen Michalanny who is an amputee field officer, Community Award winner Julie Bartlett from Starjam fame and Youth Award winner , and overall supreme winner, Roberta Francis who ignores the pain in her legs to help the people in Calcutta. There was also the blind and autistic pianist Jonathon Petty who entertained the 500 strong audience with a lively version of Swany River and a complex composition of “Twinkle Little Star” .

McKenzie Kench enjoying the moment

.
McKenzie Kench had to wait until later in the night to receive her award. McKenzie, who is a year eleven student with Cerebral Palsy, received the “Person of the Year” award. She won over everyone that came in contact with her during the year with her inspirational words about living with a disability.

She typed out her thoughts with her feet using the latest technology from Talklink and she immediately connected with her audience. McKenzie currently attends Rangitoto College and has ambitions of attending either Auckland or Massey University in the future.

Undoubtedly McKenzie’s generation will be inspired by Robert Martin who was the first inductee of the Attitude Hall of Fame. The audience were in awe of this man’s achievements despite the barriers put in front him. In the 50’s and 60’s he spent his life in IHC foster homes, sheltered workshops and for a lengthy periods in Kimberley hospital.

As he got older he gained confidence in his ability and began to speak out. Gradually he became an advocate for himself and others. Thanks to Robert the quality of life has improved out of sight for many people. He has deservedly won the New Zealand order of Merit.

Everyone agreed that it was a great night celebrating the capabilities of people of all age
